In the Spirit of Christmas: Brighther Future for Nepalese Girls

Christmas greeting Instead of sending out traditional Christmas cards Teamware Group has again this year decided to donate one euro per each reader of this webzine for a good cause, the Unicef campaign "Girls of the World to School!" aiming at providing basic education for girls in Nepal. Since you are reading this article you have already made a difference - a donation has been made on your behalf. But let us tell you a little more about the campaign.

Girls of the World to School! Global Movement for Children is one of Unicef's organizations that was founded in order to help to stop the chain of poverty, sickness and misery among the children of the world. One of the goals of the movement is to promote the importance of education and schooling all around the world. Global Movement for Children, led by Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel, has invited international decision-makers to join in and show with their example how education will make a difference in children's lives.

Going to school is a privilege.Decision-makers in Finland have chosen to help girls in the poorest areas in Nepal to receive education and schooling. Located high on the roof of the world, in the arms of the Himalayas, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world where feudalism and the caste system still have a strong effect on people's lives. The chosen areas in Nepal have the lowest number of people starting school and learning to read as well as the highest number of children working. The status of women in the patriarchal society is very low.

The target of the campaign "Girls of the World to School!" is to raise 84 million euros in three years from corporations and private citizens. Unicef's idea is to build a steady structure to support girls' education by negotiating with the girls' parents, enlightening village communities and the decision-makers about the benefits of educating a girl. Authorities are guided to have female teachers and to plan the school areas to be fitted also for girls. For those girls taking part in supporting their families, schooling has been arranged so that they can both work and go to school.

Nepalese girls need our help. The campaign aims to provide Nepalese girls with knowledge and skills through which they can have more choices and possibilities in their lives. Education and reading skills are essential in raising women's standard of living as well as making them full-fledged members of the community. Even by learning to write their own names women will gain a feeling of individuality - they are no longer anybody's property. An educated woman can also better look after her children's interests and, therefore, make the future of the whole country a little bit brighter.
